What are Rare Earth Magnets?
what are rare earth magnets?
About Rare Earth Magnets
Rare-earth magnets are strong permanent magnets made from alloys of rare-earth elements.
Since they have about 10 times the performance of ferrite magnets in total energy per volume, rare earth magnets are used for powerful magnetic circuits that could not be conceived of until now, space-saving magnetic circuits, etc.
Our Magnets Are Everywhere!
Rare Earth Magnet Basics / About Rare Earth Magnets
The metal elements called "rare earth" were discovered by J. Gadolin of Finland about 200 years ago in 1794.
He discovered yttria (Y2O3) in minerals extracted in Sweden and gave them the name rare earth (here, earth means alumina, lime, etc.)
However, the rare earth elements are not actually rare.
There is more cerium (Ce) on the Earth than tin (Sn) and more yttrium (Y) and neodymium (Nd) than cobalt (Co) and lead (Pb).
Amount of Various Elements Contained in One Ton of Igneous Rock
The biggest difference between ferrite magnets and rare earth magnets is that rare earth magnets are much stronger.
The intensity of magnetization and the coercive force are elements determining the performance of permanent magnets.
Since rare earth magnets contain iron and cobalt in the state not containing oxygen, their magnetization is large.
In addition, the magnetization of rare earth magnets has a strong force (coercive force) aligning the magnetism in one direction, so they are much stronger magnets than ferrite magnets.
Since they have about 10 times the performance of ferrite magnets in total energy per volume, rare earth magnets are used for powerful magnetic circuits that could not be conceived of until now, space-saving magnetic circuits, etc.
Type of Magnets
ALB Series neodymium magnets -composed of neodymium (Nd), iron (Fe), and boron (B)-boast the highest performance of all rare earth magnets.
As neodymium is relatively abundant, the cost of these devices is also more reasonable than that of comparable samarium (Sm) magnets.
Application of Nd magnets is expanding rapidly in various fields as their cost/performance advantages gain recognition.
Corrosion resistance, formerly considered to be a drawback, has been improved through various types of surface processing, including nickel (Ni) plating.
As a result, these magnets now deliver optimal performance for virtually any application.
Nd Magnet - Basic Composition
The thermal characteristics of ALB Series samarium magnets are superior to those of Nd magnets, maintaining high magnetism and reliability even in challenging high-temperature and opposed magnetic-field environments.
Sm magnets also offer high Curie temperatures with less coercivity temperature change-properties unmatched by other magnets.
Other Series advantages include high performance and energy output, thanks to the application of the Sm2Co17 compound rather than conventional crystalline SmCo5 result of the detailed metallurgical analysis.
Our magnets Series is recognized as the world's best Sm magnets, with characteristics approaching those of Nd magnets.
Neodymium Magnets are a member of the Rare Earth magnet family and are the most powerful permanent magnets in the world. They are also referred to as NdFeB magnets, or NIB, because they are composed mainly of Neodymium (Nd), Iron (Fe) and Boron (B). They are a relatively new invention and have only recently become affordable for everyday use.
Samarium cobalt (SmCo) magnets are another member of the Rare Earth magnet family, which have excellent temperature stability and corrosion resistance.
Permanent Magnets Vs Rare Earth Magnets
A lot of confusion arises from buyers of magnetic sweepers and industrial magnetic products regarding the difference between “Rare Earth” and “Permanent” magnets.
Technically, Rare-earth magnets are permanent magnets.
The primary difference being that rare-earth magnets are made from alloys of rare earth elements while other permanent magnets are ferrite or alnico.
When manufacturing permanent magnetic industrial devices such as magnetic sweepers, magnetic brooms, and tow-behind magnetic sweepers, virtually all companies use what is known as either Grade 8 or Grade 5 permanent ceramic magnets.
There are various grades available ranging from Grade 1-8 however Grade 8 is the strongest type and possesses the necessary properties for manufacturing magnetic sweepers such as a broader “depth of reach” than rare earth making them highly effective for “sweeping” purposes.
In contrast, permanent lifting magnets will use the rare earth magnet for its immediate surface strength and high resistance to demagnetization.
Lifting magnets need immediate “force” at the surface as opposed to a “depth of reach” making rare earth preferable for lifting magnet applications.
When researching various magnetic sweeper related products, it is virtually impossible to tell whether a company is using the strongest Grade 8 magnet or the inferior (and cheaper) Grade 5 permanent magnet.
Nearly all of the imported magnetic sweeper products contain the less effective and weaker Grade 5 permanent magnet while any reputable U.S.
The manufacturer will utilize only the Grade 8 permanent magnet.
While various magnetic sweepers and industrial magnets may look similar, it is best to confirm that the vendor is using a Grade 8 magnet inside!
