Types of Permanent Magnets

In a permanent magnet, the molecular magnets are aligned in such a way that the total magnetic strength is concentrated at the two ends.

Losing the magnetic property is termed as demagnetising. or degausing. A permanent magnet can be demagnetised by the following methods:

(1) Dropping it down continously

(2) By hammering

(3) By heating

(4) By keeping the like poles together

(5) By placing the magnet in a stronger opposite field

(6) By passing the magnet to and fro through a strong solenoid (a current carrying coil) This is the reason why the recorded audio tapes are not to be kept near strong magnets. During war time the warships are demagnetised in a degausing range.

This is to demagnetise the ship so that the magnetic mines will not be attracted by the ship.
