Rare earth neodymium magnets, also known as NdFeB magnets or Neo magnets, are made from an alloy of neodymium, iron and boron.
They are extremely strong even in small sizes.
Neodymium Magnets are permanent and have a high maximum magnetic energy.
Neodymium discs have excellent strength to size ratio which is great for smaller products.
Aerospace projects find magnetic power crucial to their success.
The N48 Grade magnetic material used in this magnet is the second highest available.
It increases the field intensity of this magnet to something which compares with a larger magnet.
Small and powerful Pushing the boundaries of nanomagnets
Researchers built extremely small, thermally stable magnetic particles with magnetic properties comparable to some rare earth magnets, the strongest permanent magnets ever created.
These tiny magnets are as small as 5 nanometers, a million times smaller than an ant.
Researchers have created extremely small, thermally stable magnetic particles.
These CoFe2C nanoparticles have magnetic properties comparable to some rare earth magnets, the strongest permanent magnets ever created, at sizes as small as 5 nanometers, a million times smaller than an ant.
The next generation of thermally stable data storage devices demands materials that are highly magnetic in a specific direction at small particle sizes.
The new CoFe2C nanoparticles accomplish this goal and can lead to nano-magnets that work at room temperature.
Van Vleck's Nobel-prize-winning explanation of the quantum origin of magnetism dates back to 1937.

However, it was not until 1999 that research, supported by the Office of Basic Energy Sciences within the U.S.
Department of Energy demonstrated that density-functional-theory could accurately predict the magnetic strength of molecular-scale systems.
By 2007, several groups had confirmed these developments, and today researchers can computationally ask: How chemically and electromagnetically durable could such nanoscale memory devices be?
Physical laws impose limits.
The reduction in the size of ordinary iron-based magnets, the foundation of computer memory, decreases the temperature at which such particles can store information.
One of the greatest problems hindering the field of nano-magnetism is that small particle sizes tend to mean small magnetic anisotropy (directional dependence of magnetic properties).
A large magnetic anisotropy is absolutely crucial to these nanoparticles because it prevents fluctuations of the magnetic moment, a phenomenon that limits the use of these particles in-memory storage and many other applications.
To become technologically relevant, nano-magnets must be small, have a large magnetic anisotropy, and be thermally stable.
Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University have computationally investigated CoFe2C nanoparticles with mixed CoxC and FexC carbide phases that fit this exact description.
After promising theoretical results, the researchers successfully synthesized the CoFe2C particles with the properties that were computationally expected.
The newly synthesized particles have been proven thermally stable (and thus store information) up to 790K at sizes as small as 5 nanometers.
Additionally, these particles have a magnetic anisotropy of 4.6 ± 2 x 106 J/m3, which is ten times larger than cobalt nanoparticles, and magnetic properties comparable to some rare earth magnets, the strongest permanent magnets ever created.
These CoFe2C nanoparticles possess the unique characteristics of both small size and a large anisotropy and could represent the future of data storage devices.
This long-term developmental work was supported by the U.S.

Neodymium is an element that was discovered in 1885, it was not until the early 1980's that the element was alloyed with iron and boron to create the "Neodymium magnets" which we use today.
The name "Rare Earth Magnets" does not refer to their abundance.
Neodymium is about as common as tin or lead.
The term Rare Earth relates to a specific group of elements in the Periodic Table which lists all known elements in groups according to their similar chemical properties.
Neodymium magnets are many times more powerful than the better known Ferrite magnets.
The magnetic strength of a Neodymium magnet is measured by it's "N" number;
the higher the number the more powerful the magnet.
N numbers range from N27 - N52.
All nickel plated type Neodymium magnets are designed to be used in dry conditions.
They are both hard and brittle by nature.
Care must be taken when handling these magnets as there is a danger of trapped fingers, pinched skin and flying shards of metal if carelessly handled.
Never allow Neodymium magnets to jump together or to jump to steel as they will likely shatter.
- NdFeB, Grade N42
- Dimension: 6mm dia. x 1mm thick
- Pull force: 0.83 lbs (0.38kg)
Suitable for usage up to a maximum of 80 degrees Centigrade.
Always keep magnets away from items that may be damaged by the powerful magnetic field such as credit cards, computers, mobile phones, CD.
Not to be handled near to or by people with Pacemakers or other medical devices.
The actual pull strengths will vary depending on other variables such as Steel thickness (the thinner the steel the lower the pull strength), Steel Quality (for example pitted/corroded), Surface finish (painted, powder-coated will result in a reduced pull force).
A safety and information sheet is sent out with all magnets.
WARNING - This magnet is VERY powerful and totally unsuitable for Children!!

Rare Earth Permanent Magnets
Neodymium magnets are the most powerful magnets available (per unit volume) and are often referred to as Rare Earth Magnets.
They have an elaborate manufacturing process of vacuum melting, milling, pressing, and sintering.
These magnets can then be sliced into smaller magnets or ground to tighter tolerances using diamond grinding tools.
Neodymium magnets are relatively new, they were developed in the mid-1980s and can now be found extensively in countless modern applications from fridge magnets to wind turbines! You will find them in disc shapes, pots, rings, rectangular, rods, and many more!
Disc magnets are incredibly versatile and have great strength for their size.
They can be fixed in place using adhesive or pushed into drilled holes in wood or plastic.
